Camping Trip: things to keep in mind.
Summer is approaching fast. The last school bell of the year will ring soon, marking the start of the long-awaited and much-anticipated vacations. Beautiful weather and long days encourage little getaways. Some opt for a relaxing all-inclusive holiday, others travel the world, explore different countries, and experience distant cultures, while others pack a backpack and head out camping. Have you chosen the last option but are just starting your camping adventure and looking for simple tips on how to organise it? Read on for more information.
Where to Camp? Choose the Right Place and Ensure Safety
You’ve embarked on a backpacking trip and found a beautiful, picturesque spot where you want to set up your camp? Excellent! However, remember to make sure that you can legally sleep in the chosen area. Not every place in the forest allows camping. Before you start setting up camp, make sure that the spot you’re in is within a designated area for wild camping. Also, check the proximity of a drinking water source. Remember that not all water sources are safe to drink from. The safest option is to carry water with you or filter it. Be sure to use a high-quality, reliable filter.
Also, remember that an ideal camping spot should not only offer a beautiful view and great scenery but should also be flat and dry. If you can’t find such a spot and have to pitch your tent on a slope, make sure to set it up so that your head is higher than your feet while sleeping. Otherwise, you might wake up with a headache the next day, and your rest won’t be as effective as it should be. Ensure the place you choose is safe. Don’t set up your tent under broken branches that could fall on your tent during a gust of wind. It’s best to set up camp in daylight – it will be much easier to find a suitable, dry, flat, and safe spot. Avoid pitching your tent in small valleys, as these are the coldest points.
Organising a Camping Trip – What to Take with You?
Wondering what to take on a camping trip? Remember that when packing your gear, you should consider the terrain characteristics, the season, the number of people camping, the expected weather conditions, and whether you can drive to the campsite or not.
When going camping, take a good quality tent suited to your needs, which will protect you from rain, wind, and insects. More on choosing a tent can be found in our previous blog post.
Be sure to bring a light source – a good torch and spare batteries are a must. Lamps that can be hung from the tent ceiling and head torches can also be useful. Remember to bring a sleeping mat, inflatable mattress, or self-inflating mat, along with inflatable pillows and a sleeping bag. Be prepared for the fact that the temperature right by the ground will be lower than the forecasted one. It’s also worth getting thermal underwear, a hat, and socks to improve your sleeping comfort. Seat mats are also worth considering, so you don’t have to sit on the cold, dirty ground.
Be sure to take cooking equipment and dining utensils with you. Don’t forget a first aid kit, essential medications, bandages, and insect repellents. Personal hygiene items, a quick-drying towel, and small packages of essential toiletries are also necessary. For longer trips, a camping shower might be useful. Be sure to take wet wipes for cleaning or refreshing your hands and rubbish bags. Remember not to leave a mess behind!
Remember that campfires are prohibited in the forest as they can cause wildfires!
